five-minute friday: she

Okay.  So it's been a loong time, but I'm diving back into the five-minute fun this week :)
You might remember this means no editing, or tinkering, or obsessing.

Three of my favorite things...

Happy Friday!

She's been my daughter's "half" and one of my girls since forever, and she's getting married today.
(I'm embarrassingly giddy.)

She'll be five years old in just a few weeks and has filled my life up in ways I could have never anticipated.

I loved her before she knew how to read and now she lives across the world with her husband, loving others and inspiring me to do the same.

She is wading through the boxes and toys and general mayhem, her belly filled up with her first daughter, my granddaughter...my heart could burst thinking of them.

She's recovering from major surgery, no doubt utterly miserable and perhaps a wee bit discouraged, and I fear she can't fathom how precious she is to me.

She's a mere three months old and all chubby and long and warm and dimply and precious
...and infinitely full of promise.

She loves where she lives even while homesick for her soldier-son and missionary-daughter.

She's scurrying around tending to the husband-with-the-broken-foot, possibly driving him nuts with all the attention and concern and healthy snacks, but most assuredly filling his life with love.

She's the mother of three of my grandchildren.  She's my firstborn & precious friend.  I'm so proud of her.
I couldn't love her more with chocolaty bribes.

She makes casseroles for the sick or the sad or the happy, and cleans houses for the overwhelmed, and offers frazzled mamas a break, and tends to the dying, and copes with unthinkable decisions, and mothers alone, and makes me laugh, and deals with her loss, and gets back up when she's blown it all to pieces.

...and I am in awe.

xoxo

five-minute friday: expectation

My sweet, generous friend has invited me to join her at the beach again this summer so at this moment I'm filled UP with expecting...

sun-kissed skin & pink noses

sandy toes & corny jokes

bubbling hot tubs & little-girl giggles

chicken salad by the water

brightly-colored umbrellas

non-stop balmy breezes

exaggerated southern accents

reading, reading, reading

reluctant work

time-warp speed

wishing we could do it again

abundant gratitude

I do love my friends :)

Happy Friday!

five minute friday: see

Looking around me on this wet, gloomy day I see...

the last remnants of my favorite  cinnamon candle flickering atop the old apple crates that I use as a side table,

the basket on the floor attempting to keep my work paraphernalia in one place

last night's McDonald's remnants (oh the shame!),

a stack of second-grade curriculum options,

that shiny-new, flat-screen-y gift that makes me smile every time I notice,

pictures of what matters tucked all over,

the ant traps under the window

(sigh)

three pairs of flip flops, one pair of sandals, and two different sets of tennis shoes (my twice-his-age size 7s and his sturdy little boy's),

a brand new copy of Seven: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess, my Bible and the Jesus Calling devotional,

Peyton's bouncy seat, and Audrey's & Owen's books, and assorted first-grade miscellany

baby wipes, and the blanket Tana gave me forever ago that used to wrap around my little girls, and the mini trampoline that sometimes makes me sore, and the same blue box of Leggos that have been in use in my living room for nearly 20 years.

When I look around I see life spilling over everywhere,

and I don't really mind the gloomy gray anymore.

Happy Friday :)

Five Minute Friday: Opportunity

I'm not much of a morning person, but ya know what I love about the first thing in the morning?

It's all shiny clean.

Like, freshly-fallen-snow clean.

Lily-white clean.

Just scrubbed-the-floors-until-they-sparkle clean.

The whole day is spread out for each of us, spilling over with possibility.  And it doesn't matter who we are.  It doesn't matter what we have or do not have.   It doesn't matter what we look like, or feel like, or think we do or do not deserve,

When we open our eyes in the morning and start our day, we all have the exact same precious, 24 hours of potential.

We have a brand-new, God-given opportunity to try again, to create something beautiful, to make a difference...to build a life one day at a time.

All in all, pretty astounding...

Happy Friday :)

Five-Minute Friday: Community

I'm having dinner with my friend tonight.  I've known her since I was quite possibly a size 2 with no lines on my face and a shockingly optimistic view of how life was going to unfold.  We had little girls who were preschoolers and a little girl (me!) and a little boy (her!) who were a couple of years younger than that.  Which means they were babies.  Literally.  If my Kate was four then my Kari was two.

TWO!

Anyway, that's a long time to have a friend.

And she isn't the only friend I've had longer than I kept that alleged unlined face.  I know I've mentioned it before, but I have the somewhat unusual blessing of having a handful of friends who have known me through all the awkward and heartbreaking and bliss.

They know my favorite treat when I'm frazzled, and how to pray for me without me having to say it out loud.  They know where my heart lies and understand when I'm very quiet for a very long time.

We have giggled and cried and cracked wise in ways that no one else would find amusing.   We've embarrassed our children, and supported our children, and then embarrassed them some more.

We've celebrated, and mourned, and shopped, and prayed, & celebrated some more :)

I can see them every day and have new things to talk about and I can neglect them for weeks and weeks - and weeks - on end and pick up our conversation right where we left off.

For the life of me I can't imagine how I would have survived without them, and I'm so thankful that my community of people is so completely my norm,

that I don't even have to try.

Happy (Five-Minute) Friday!

Five Minute Friday: Loud

No deep thoughts here today, I'm sleepy.  But I do have a question.

Question:  Do you dream loud?

Is that odd and strange?  I'd never really thought about it but Ive noticed a couple of mornings this week that when I wake up my first conscious thought is how nice the quiet is, and I realize it was kinda loud all night long.

What does it mean?  Any theories?  It seems lately my sleep has been filled with an underlying flavor of controlled frenzy.  I don't really remember any particularly bad dreams or what-have-you, just a kind of busy.

I can't figure out if it has something to do with stress (which I'm not! much...) or fatigue (which I am! some...), or perhaps it's the two-zillion episodes of Law & Order I've watched in recent months.

Or maybe it's just an extension of the way my mind is kinda/sorta always in the "on" position?

Or maybe I'm just weird.

Hmm.

No matter the cause, I'm planning to conduct a couple of experiments to see if I can come with an explanation.

Any theories or hypotheses or wild guesses?

I'm all ears :)

Off to unplug the television,*
and take a nap,

*Not really.  Just kidding.  I am not actually unplugging the television.  Elijah would be mad if he missed Sid the Science Guy and nobody needs that kind of trouble.

Five Minute Friday: Brave

Happy no-stressing-no-editing-no-angsting-over-perfection day!

(That of course is not to imply every other day around here is perfect...but there just might be some futile angsting from time to time :)

Anyhoo, I hope y'all have a delightful weekend with at least a taste of the yummy weather we are enjoying right now.  Let's just say the Dogwoods, they are a-bloomin'!

One more thing before we get started.

Happy happy wedding day, Chelsea!  I'm miserable about missing your Big Day but am praying for you all.  Congratulations and best wishes for you and your new husband :)  We love you, sweetie!

Now, on to business :)

Brave...

I never thought I was a very brave person.  I used to picture brave as some kind of lofty, hazy perfection, and as was too often the case, I didn't quite meet the criteria.

(Poor younger me...I was so hard on her.  I didn't understand.  at all.)

As I've grown older I recognize that life is a far less complicated than we give it credit for.

Now I know that being brave is simple. and hard. and messy. and beautiful.

Being brave is doing it again when you've gotten it wrong so very many times before.

Being brave is determining what you want, or believe, or need...and articulating it clearly, and respectfully, and appropriately.

Being brave is loving in the face of rejection.

Being brave is having reasonably high expectations for your children while loving them as they figure it out for themselves.

being brave is facing what is done is done and blazing a new trail...or simply following the detour signs

being brave is getting up every day in the middle of the clutter, and the chaos, and the tears, and the giggles and the hugs and the dirty dishes and the bickering (or maybe the silence, and heartbreak, and overdue bills, and fear)

...and feeding, and correcting, and encouraging, and disciplining, and loving the ones God has placed in the middle of your day

even if the only one there is you.

Happy Friday:)

FMF: Empty

Happy Friday, Y'all!

WE MADE IT!!  (Although there is a whole lot of Friday left for me because of the whole working-at-night-and-everyone-else-is-finished thing, but still FRIDAY!)

Do you remember the FMF "rules?"  Write for five and edit not.

Spell check permissible :)

Let's get started,, shall we?

{Start}

Empty generally (or at least often) has a negative connotation.

Empty.  Barren.  In possession of nothing.

In need of filling up, or replacing, or what-have-you.

Not the favorite of a person like me who enjoys a bent toward All Cozy, All The Time.

However... I'm thinking empty can also be quite glorious!

How's about  some empty hampers?

See?

I'm thinking an empty to-do list, or (gasp!) an empty schedule would also be quite welcome :)

Or here's my favorite...an empty sink devoid of a single dirty dish!

I'm not gonna lie to ya, the concept feels like mostly a pipe dream, but it has been known to happen from time to time, and seeing as we are heading straight into a Saturday that (for me) is empty of all commitments, it's within the realm of possibility that I fulfill at least one of the aforementioned dreams :)

Yaay!

Hope springs eternal, ya know :)

What about you?  What would like to have a lot more empty of?

Hope your Friday is *full* of happy!

Five-Minute Friday: Delight

So I'm sitting here with my laptop on my, well, lap.  I have a large amount of laundry sitting in my car waiting to be carried in the house, dragged up the stairs, and put away appropriately.  Yet I'm sitting here with the aforementioned laptop.

My excuse is I needed to eat the carefully-constructed all-beef hot dog from my local 7-Eleven before it got completely inedible from lack of hot.  As far as excuses go I'm thinking that's a pretty good one.

We did school in the living room (a tiny bit), the car (a little more), Food Lion (what does that box say and what's the difference between that box and this one?), and a good bit inside the laundromat.

I had forgotten how fun it is to school at home where you can make the rules as you go along.  Personally I think watching Elijah's delight in discovering the crazy-big, huge washing machine spinning out the now-clean clothes is the most delight I've experienced since, well, yesterday when I squeezed that newborn that I'm so fond of.

I also find the sound of his laugh to be on the delightful side,
and quite frankly, hearing him sound out his words makes me a different kind of happy altogether.

...and when he lagged behind me to hold the door open for that delighted woman heading his way?

Yeah, delight doubled.

I do love me a sunny Friday spent with love.

Happy Friday!

Five-Minute Friday: Awake

I don't know about y'all, but I'm surely glad it's Friday! There has been plenty of busy around these parts with a healthy dose of Murphy's Law to keep things interesting. For reasons I can't identify I haven't done a Five-Minute Friday post in MONTHS, but today seems like the perfect time to jump back in :)

So here's the deal.  On Fridays Lisa-Jo picks a topic and then we set the kitchen timer for five minutes and write.   Freestyle.  With precious little deliberation beforehand.  No editing.  No stressing.  Just writing and then stopping.  Shall we get started?

Awake...

{Start}

It's easy for me to slide through my days to the rhythm of the day before half-asleep...sort of the way I can drive from Point A to Point B with little explanation of how I got there.  I can get up from my bed with little thought at all and take care of the urgent and crawl back into my bed at the end of the day, neglecting to notice all the life going on right in front of me.

Being wide-awake can be HARD.  When I'm awake I feel more, which means I can hurt more.  People can disappoint me more.  My bones, and my back, and my heart, they ache more...

But on those days when I wake up and really see what I'm seeing and feel what I'm feeling, when I make a point to love like a verb...when I end the day exhausted from all the hard things that come with waking up I sleep a sleep of peace, all filled up with knowing I made a difference.  And as my eyes flutter shut against Andy and Barney's hijinks, my mind is filled with all the hope and possibility that comes with tomorrow.

Happy Friday!

Five Minute Friday: Beauty

Okay y'all, it's time for some no-stress writing Friday-style.  Therefore, I'm going to dive right into my write-for-five-minutes-and-then-call-it-a-night assignment.

And then I'm going to call it a night :)

p.s.  No pictures because Blogger?  Yeah.  Mad at me again.

Here we go!

{Start}

On Beauty

This is an interesting topic for me today coming right on the heels of seeing The Help yesterday.  One of the things that struck me in the movie was recognizing all the simmering nastiness lying beneath the surface in those pretty, pretty girls...which in turn made them not at all pretty - and frankly rather hard to even look at.

But then there were other women in the film who were tired and worn down, and certainly without all the trappings that we use to make us more atractive, and I found myself weeping from the beauty of their courage, and strength, and dignity.

That seeming contradiction got me to thinking about different people I've seen lately who do not fit the traditional stereotypes of beautiful at all but draw me in like a moth to a flame.

Like the sweet couple I saw walking ahead of me in the mall last weekend, stooped over with age and life, and most surely living in their 8th or 9th decade.  As they shuffled along, somewhat lost in their own shared world, I saw little physical evidence of the strong young couple they once were.  But when I noticed his arm firmly around her I knew, even without seeing their faces or hearing their story, that he loved her.  Frankly, I can't recall the last time I've seen such a pure expression of love like that in the walls of that local mall...and as the tears sprang up I knew I was staring down at beauty at its very best.

I don't know a lot in life but this I know for certain.  Beauty is not about blue eyes, or straight shoulders, or even thin waists.

To me, beauty is in the loving.

And loving well?  Exquisite.

Happy Friday!

Way More than Five Minute Friday: On Loss

I have always been somewhat self-deprecating.  Anyone close to me has heard me assert that there is always someone whose suffering is more intense, whose loss is more profound, whose stress is more unbearable.

And that is completely true.  I think I've always had a healthy dose of perspective into the fact that everybody's got it hard sometimes.

That being said, it has always been difficult for me to allow myself my own negative feelings.  When asked, I'm always fine.  I try not to complain or be perceived as "needy" in any way.  I certainly don't want anyone to worry or to be bothered by little ol' me.

But as I've grown, and yes, aged, I've come to understand that it is also important to be honest about where we are, with ourselves, with God, and with each other.

It's important to acknowledge how He's working in our miseries as well as our sunshine-y days.

I remember back when my marriage was ending and things had been, shall we say, dramatic, for what already felt like forever, and the bad just kept coming in waves and the good was increasingly hard to find, and I sat all alone one morning and actually announced to myself that this was a big deal, that my stress and pain and yes, grief, was real and it was okay for me to own it.  I literally gave myself permission to be devastated and admit that I was not strong.  I told myself it was okay to allow the tears to fall and to receive the kind words of support from those who loved me.

It's odd that even in some of my darkest days I didn't feel entitled to my own pain.

Now I'm not sure how much of that is some kind of crazy on my part, and how much of it is just the way I'm built, so to speak, but mainly I guess I'm just someone recognizes that we all suffer.

And many of us have lost preciousness that we were certain we could not continue without.

And yet we continue...

For one miserably extended period of time I awoke day, after day, after day...certain that I couldn't do it again.  I was positive that I couldn't pack the lunches and face the friends and do the job and wipe all the tears without fracturing into a zillion pieces.

And yet I did.

I kept crawling out of bed into the light and doing what needed to be done.  And as often as possible I crawled right up into the lap of The One who would never leave me and would always take care of me, and I allowed him to give me strength, and courage, and discernment, and faith...and Hope.

So as someone who would rather talk about all the happy, all the time, here I am, publicly telling you that I am someone who has lost things held dear.  Among them?  I have a complicated relationship with my dad and I was rejected by my husband.

Two things that are surely very tall mileposts in the journey of this girl's heart, which in turn splintered off into many, many other losses...and yes, they are heartbreaking and yes, I suppose, irretrievable.

But what I've learned is quite possibly worth all the rest of it.

Because when I lost what I valued most
I gained what I needed most.

And when the dreams I had for myself were all ruined
God gave me better ones.

He gave me lovely dreams full of beauty, and grace, and redemption...

I have lost relationships that to this day I wish I could have back, and I could ruminate for a really long time about the dear, sweet people I miss and the bittersweetness that comes from the remembering.

But my prayer is that my life is a testament not only to the healing that God can do in a heart that asks for it,
but also to the restoration of a broken life.

Because no matter what the loss, the losing isn't really the end.

It's just the beginning of what can be a breathtakingly precious journey with Him.

And I say this with certainty...As much as I would love to have every bit of it back, if I couldn't keep all the beautiful wonder I have gained in the process I would have to stay right here...right where I am.

Thank you, Jesus!

Five Minute Friday: Home

Today's topic is Home and I'm diving right in because I do love me some home :)

{Start}

A homebody is what I am.

I love even the word home.  For probably all my life I haven't desired many things more than children who love and honor God and warm, loving, happy home.

We had a bit of a detour some years back from the original specs I had drawn up for this home to look like, but that was okay.  God was here and He helped us color in all the lines, and He filled us and our four walls with more warm, loving, and happy than I could have dreamed up for myself.

For several years I have worked at home.  In high school I home-schooled the girls.  I drive my friends nuts because even now that I live alone I can stay inside these walls for many days without opening a car door.

What can I say?  Home is my Happy Place.

Seriously y'all.  I am a girl who places a high value on this place where I make my bed and eat my peanut butter.

But if "home is where the heart is," then I am quite the wanderer.

I have found home to be an outdated little dorm room in  upstate New York...and down in the Carolinas.

I've had summer homes in the heat of the Dominican Republic... and in a certain beloved church camp.

My home for several weeks was on an abandoned beach in Phuket...and I even put a few temporary roots in African soil.

My home has cried in school hallways,  prayed at church altars, stood up for the Name of Jesus, stumbled and rallied...kept and shared secrets.

These days my mail comes to these walls with a floor that I usually walk alone, but I would say my real home is across town growing that sweet baby of her very own...and two hours winding through all the green and the trees, teaching and  learning and growing her own home.

That's right, y'all.

A homebody I am...and will always be.

Happy Friday!

p.s.  I am sorry and embarrassed and chagrined to report that I spent approximately 9 or 11 minutes on this 5-minute assignment.  I blame it on my passion for the subject matter.  My abject apologies to Lisa-Jo for being a big, fat cheater.  HA.  I'll do better next week ;)

Five Minute Friday: Backwards

So I almost skipped today's post altogether because I was away all day having a good bit of SOME FUN, and then I came straight home, diving headlong into SOME WORK, and I'm tired.

Also for whatever reason this week's prompt seemed hard.

I don't like hard.

I avoid hard whenever possible.

But then I saw something that cracked me up and I thought something along the lines of Hey that kinda reminds me of these week's FMF topic.  And there you have it.  Some fatigue-riddled inspiration in the nature of...something or other.

So without any further adieu, I share this week's Five-Minute Friday offering, as many words as I can squeeze into 300 seconds on a verylate Friday night.  And then I'm outta here.  Because, you know, my bed is calling my name & all.

On a little healthy backtracking

{Start}

As has been the case many times in the last few weeks, we had a humdinger of an electrical storm this afternoon.  The heavens opened up in a crazy  way and thoroughly soaked everything below, and that was kind've ok, but I was not a fan of all the thundering and lightening and thundering going on.

Once the thunder cracked so loudly and the lightening was so close I may or may not have yelped a little bit as I snatched the headphones out of my ears, and flung them across the room.

Anyway, as I watched the storm raging outside my window I saw these three little teenage girls strolling up my street in their cut-off shorts and bikini tops.  They were tiny and cute and tiny, and I'm pretty sure they knew they were tiny and cute and tiny, but all I could think was what in the world are those goofy girls doing out in the  middle of a thunderstorm???  My only guess is that they wanted to...well, get wet.

So right after I flung my headphones across the room I see those same three adolescents flying down the street back from whence they had come.  HA!  That lightening had put some appropriate caution in their little heads and suddenly they forgot how tiny and cute they were and just wanted to get home!

That whole scene tickled me about three different ways and I hopped up and watched them run all the way home.  Silly girls.

Of course then I got to thinking about how often I saunter along some ill-conceived path doing something foolhardy only to hoof it back home just as quick as I can with all sense of pride and decorum out the window, so to speak, as I dive headfirst back through my own "front door."

And I can only hope that I don't have a giggling audience witnessing my own personal foolishness.

Happy Weekending!

Five Minute Friday: Every Day

{Start}

Every day I wake up and breathe in the life God has given me, stand on the two legs that are stable and strong, and walk down the stairs to my kitchen stocked with more food than I need.

Every day I step into my shower with the hot running water and wash away the grime of another 24 hours of living, somewhat similar to how I ask God to wash me clean of the unkind words and thoughtless actions, poor choices and bad decisions I make every day.

Every day there is chaos and order, filth and perfection, joy and despair, and some fear and a little confidence.

Every day I wake up and God replaces my anxiety with peace, my need with provision, my greed with contentment...my loneliness with love.

God stays right with me as I navigate all the ups and downs and ins and outs of my world...

Every single day.

Five Minute Friday: On Forgetting

Ready, set...GO!

Memory is a fascinating subject to me, maybe because mine is lousy.  Most of my yesterdays are foggy and sometimes my earlier this mornings are a little on the fuzzy side.

But there are random times that I can recall with startling clarity, and it is inexplicable to me why some memories stick like glue and some breath-takingly lovely times seem to fade away into obscurity.

However, over time I have come to realize that those wonderful sunny days aren't really gone at all.

They've just sorta melded together into a wonderful kaleidoscope of color and music and life.

I wonder...if I had absolute recall would I ever be able to move forward?  Could I bear to let go of my children if at this very moment my heart and mind could fully smell their little six-year-old heads, or feel their hands tucked inside mine?

Or (yikes!) would it be any easier to crawl out of bed now than it was back then when I feared life would never look happy again?

I doubt it.  I suspect, whether contemplating the glorious or the miserable, I would be completely stuck in what already was.

God is so wonderful in giving us beauty in ways that are healthy and good.

So although I may have forgotten many most of the million different precious moments that are the sum parts of my life, I haven't forgotten my life.

I haven't forgotten for one minute the warmth, the laughs, the prayers....the love.

I haven't forgotten the important things at all.

Five Minute Friday: When Seasons Change

Happy Friday, y'all!  It's that time again :)

Since I didn't explain last week, I'll remind you again of what this little bloggy experiment is all about.

As implied by the title.  I'm writing for five minutes.

I know, right?  So complicated, HA!

The trick is to stop there and leave all the overthinking that is, well, me, and just...let it go.

This weeks topic?  When Seasons Change

{Start}

When seasons change, the already-done becomes a memory and the could-be become the focus.

Just when I think I can't take another day of the cold, the temperatures start to soar and the sun breaks through...and as I'm reflecting on the sheer misery of the long darkness I realize it's seven o'clock in the evening and I can still see "my" mountain in the distance.

And amazingly enough... approximately 10 minutes before I declare I can't stand another minute of the heat, that seems to be when the air begins to turn crisp and the sky turns so clear and brilliantly blue that I can hardly bear the beauty of it all.

Through the years I have found such joy in watching God do that for the inside of me as well.  Just when the long droughts have left me nearly completely parched...the cleansing, healing rain starts to fall.

And when I am certain that I can't cry another tear?  Well.  That's right when the nearly blinding in it's glory sunshine of hope breaks through.

When seasons change, hope breaks through and potential for the anything rises to the surface.

When seasons change, hope breaks through

...and once again I am gifted with the strength - and the want to  - to leap into whatever comes next.

Love,

Five Minute Friday: Motherhood Should Come With...

It's Friday!  So without preamble...

{Start}

I think motherhood should come with a pause button so we can sit and stay a while in those precious times when everything lines up just right, and we are all happy and smiling and clean...and life feels just too full to bear.

It should also come with a rewind button so we can hop back just a bit (or a lot!) and undo the cranky tones and frowny faces and exasperated sighs and distracted hearts - -

- - and also so we can re-do the big days, like when she toddled into my arms that first time, or that first day of school...the day I drove away from her freshman dorm or that last night with my babies sleeping in their own beds before becoming married women.

Yes, a go-back button would be quite desirable to help grab the tail of those days that fly by in a lightening-fast blur.

That little hollering bundle of joy should come with an unlimited supply of tissues, and energy, and extra time - and an always-turned-on video camera to capture all the things going unnoticed while busy wiping up the messes.

Motherhood should come with perspective, and patience, a great sense of humor, clear priorities, and an unlimited supply of understanding the big picture.

Right from the start, motherhood should come with a warning that my heart will never be truly safe again, that it will fill with unfathomable highs and break with remarkable ease.

And I wouldn't have it any other way.

{Stop}

Happy Friday!

p.s.  I went over approximately five minutes on this one.  To my shame that means I doubled my time limit.  Very not cool, I know.  I'm officially sorry for breaking the rules - - next week I'm back on the straight and narrow, so to speak :)  Have a great weekend!
